Government Faces Deadline to Address SNAP Benefit Theft Concerns

People who have had their grocery money stolen might not get it back anymore if the government doesn't do something soon. The problem is that criminals have been stealing from a program called SNAP which helps over 41 million Americans buy food.

The government was giving back the stolen money until now, but that could stop after September 30 if new laws aren't made.

Last year, the government allowed states to use money to give back to people who were victims of these thefts. However, many states might not use their own money to help out if the government stops this. Congressman Ruppersberger says it's important for Congress to take action, but they haven't made it a priority yet.

Lots of money, over $61.5 million, has already been given back to around 125,000 families, and that's probably not even everyone who was affected.

These thefts happen because the cards people use for SNAP lack special security features, making them easy targets. They don't have chips like most bank cards, and the law doesn't protect these victims the same way. Criminals are using tricky methods to steal the card information and take the money for themselves.

Some politicians are frustrated that it's taking so long to make the cards safer. Senator Wyden, for example, suggested a law to make the cards more secure, but nothing has come of it yet.

Two states, California and Oklahoma, have said they will start using cards with chips, which are harder to steal from. Better technology could really lower the amount of theft. In fact, California has already been using its own money to help replace stolen SNAP benefits ever since the federal help might stop.

The government has said that SNAP is very important for keeping families fed and that they're working on stopping these thefts from happening. Still, they want Congress to keep helping people who lose their money to theft.

It's tough for families when their food money gets stolen, even if it's just for a short while. It can make it hard for them to pay for other things like rent or utilities. In most states, if the government stops reimbursing stolen money, people won't get any help unless the states decide to step in.

One mother from Boston shared that losing her SNAP benefits to theft was shocking and left her scrambling at food banks to feed her kids. She's hoping for more secure cards, saying it should be an easy problem to fix.

In short, if the government doesn't act, a lot of people who get SNAP could be left with no help if their money is stolen again, which seems unfair to many.
