This program is managed by the United States Department of Agriculture at the national level, with Texas Health and Human Services handling state-specific requirements in Texas.
In Texas, eligible recipients of SNAP benefits get their funds monthly through an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, locally known as the Lone Star Card. This card functions much like a typical debit or credit card.
It allows beneficiaries to purchase essential food items such as carbs, proteins, fruits, and vegetables, although it cannot be used to buy hot prepared foods, tobacco, alcohol, or non-food items, nor can it be used to pay bills.
Households with low income, as well as unemployed persons, can apply for SNAP. There are certain rules for individuals aged 18 to 52, who may face time limits on their benefits and are often required to seek employment. Pregnant women and those with disabilities do not face these restrictions.
